I know Bmw extended the warranty but that doesnt help at all, I just want to get on my car, ride how long I want without the preoccupation of a HPFP failure. Even though we see a lot of threads on here regarding the issue, we're a small percentage of the BMW community, often with mods pushing the fuel system even further than intended. Other causes for failure are fuel leakage and solenoid issues. A BMW high pressure fuel pump replacement is a fairly straightforward repair with one caveat: the intake manifold must also be removed from the engine in order to access the fuel pump mounting bolts. Since the intake manifold must be removed, you should also replace your intake gaskets which are also prone to failure if reused.
You should also replace the o-ring on your throttle body since it must be removed as well. We have dealt with multiple reports of these generic pumps failing with less than miles of driving on them.
High pressure fuel pump required — A replacement pump is unfortunately very expensive…we had to purchase one for this article so we feel your pain. The following pump is the same part installed at the BMW dealership and will last the remaining life of your vehicle with proper maintenance. Intake manifold gaskets required — Since the intake manifold will need to be removed for this repair, you must replace its gaskets.
Not replacing your intake manifold gaskets can cause a vacuum leak after reassembly. Throttle body gasket required — Like the manifold gaskets, the throttle body gasket must always be replaced to avoid a vacuum leak after reassembly. Fuel pressure sensor optional — The fuel pressure sensor is a vital component of the high pressure fuel system and has a high failure rate.
Now is a great time to replace the sensor since it will need to be disconnected and removed with the fuel rail during this repair. The cabin filter housing is located at the back of the engine and must be removed to gain access to the intake manifold.
In fact we strongly recommend not removing any of the wiring harnesses connected at the bottom of the intake manifold during this repair. The pump is buried underneath the intake manifold…there is unfortunately no other way to access it. The BMW high pressure fuel pump can now be easily accessed and removed. Remember that you will need a long reach 5mm hex socket to reach the fuel pump bolts… a regular hex wrench will not work.

The gear chain drive off the engine drives the vacuum pump and HPFP.
Looking at RealOEM the sprocket is actually the same part number on both engines. The difference is that the S55 pump uses 1 pump for low load while the 2nd one kicks in at higher loads. I am thinking it wouldn't be too hard to retrofit the pump into an N The fuel quanitity control valves are controlled differently vs the N54, but a custom electronic input into the HPFP wouldn't be too hard to rig up.

The actual machine work won't be too bad, but then you really need to be diligent about getting metal shavings out of it, since pretty much any contamination will kill you in short order.
